Kernersville – Mr. Thomas Oakley Baughan, 88, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2022, at his home surrounded by his wife and children. He was born May 27, 1934, in Kingston, West Virginia. to the late James Leonard Baughan and Lorene Della Fauber Baughan.
Tom was the oldest of six children. His family lived in Boomer, West Virginia, where they spent their childhood.
He attended Gauley Bridge High School, where he met his sweetheart, Nancy and played on the basketball and baseball teams. He loved sports, and especially those two.
He continued his education at West Virginia Tech, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he spent most of his service in France. During his service, he returned home, and he and Nancy were married on August 21, 1958, in Front Royal Virginia.
He returned from his service in the Army, and they lived in Fairfax, Virginia, where they started their family. They later moved to West Virginia, and then to North Carolina.
Tom chose a profession in computer technology and has worked in various positions throughout his career. He worked for Burlington Industries, and he spent most of his career with R.J. Reynolds, where he retired. He made many friends during his career and has continued these friendships until the time of his death.
Tom was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served in various callings throughout the years, his favorite calling came from his love of the temple, as he served in the Atlanta GA, Columbia SC, and the Raleigh NC temples. He cherished the friendships he made while serving there.
Tom was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He loved his family and his Nancy with all of his heart. He cherished the life that they made together and for eternity.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers James Orcutt Baughan and Raymond Roger Baughan, sister Linda Lou Baughan Vaughan, sister-in-law Lana Baughan, granddaughter, Lindsay Baughan, and great-granddaughter Page Caroline Holmes.
Surviving are his loving wife, Nancy Highberger Baughan, four children, Joseph Thomas Baughan (Marcia), James Christopher Baughan (Christi), Anne Elizabeth Baughan Page (Barry), Jonathan O,Neal Baughan (Lisa); 19 grandchildren: Kyle, Kasey, Keaton, Kristian, Kenley, Kade, Karter, Andrew, Eli, Clara, Tyler, Laura, Christopher, Cameron, Austin, Dyllon, Carson, Devan, and Tyler; 11 great grandchildren; his sister, Gypsy Hummel (Craig); a brother, Donald Robert Baughan; his sisters -in -law, Kitty Baughan Cole (Hal) and Ruth Highberger Clark; and many special nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would also like to extend our gratitude to the nurses and staff of Trellis Hospice who provided exceptional care for our father.
A funeral service will be held 1:00 PM Saturday, August 13, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8934 West Market St. Colfax NC, with Bishop David Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM prior to the service at the church.
