Thelma Hurt Yates

Mrs. Thelma Hurt Yates, 89, of Winston-Salem, passed away July 16, 2010 at her home. She was born July 14, 1921 in Perry County, KY to Bryan and Maggie Grigsby Hurt. Mrs. Yates was a member of Salem Baptist Church where she was a choir member and children's Sunday school teacher. Preceded in death is her husband of 52 years, Burnes Garnett Yates, Sr. Surviving are two sons, Junior Yates and wife Shelva of Midway, Bob Yates and wife Kathie of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Mitch Yates of Midway and Mike Yates and wife Crystal of Clemmons; two great-grandchildren, Walker and Zane Yates; two sisters, Vera Vestal of Shallotte and Ruby Combs of Hazard, KY; two sisters-in-law Donna Hurt of Tiffin, OH and Ruby Grigsby of SC; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11:00AM Monday, July 19, 2010 at Salem Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Wilburn and Rev. Floyd Bowles officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM until 8:00PM Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to thank Hospice for the loving care they gave Mrs. Yates.
