Thelma Maxine Wade McDermott Moore went to be with her loving Lord and Savior Saturday August 6, 2022. She passed in the home with family by her side, after a difficult struggle with Alzheimer’s. Thelma was best known for her beautiful smile and welcoming hospitality to family, friends, and strangers alike. She was a devoted caregiver and advocate for her husband after his many strokes.
Thelma was born January 4, 1929, in Roanoke, VA to the late Dave L. Wade Sr. and Lucy C Heath Wade. She graduated at the age of 15 from Colonial High School in Blue Ridge, VA. She worked at Webster Brick Company for 7 years. Thelma married her late husband George W. McDermott in 1949 whom she lost tragically in 1951.
Thelma came to a saving knowledge of Christ at 20. She enrolled in classes at Piedmont Bible College where she met and married Jackson in June 1955. Thelma earned her Bachelor’s degree in Religious Education from Piedmont Bible College in 1956.
Jackson and Thelma served in Sao Paulo, Brazil for 33 years; building churches, translating Christian materials, and mentoring young missionaries.
Thelma is preceded in death by her parents, David and Lucy Wade, husband Rev. Jackson Moore; siblings Kirk Wade, Raymond (Betty) Wade, Charles (Edna) Wade, Orion (Anne) Wade, and Lois (Jesse) Jones. She is survived by her four children; John (Tammy) Moore, Rachel (Stan) Seawell, Elizabeth Golding, Andrew Moore; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She has a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM Friday, August 12, 2022, at Salem Baptist Church. Family will receive friends 1 hour prior. Committal service will be at Parklawn Memorial Park.
