Mrs. Thelma ""Jean"" (Shumate) Looper, age 73 went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday June 21, 2010 at Forsyth Medical Center. Jean was born on July 24, 1936 in Forsyth County to the late Grover and Thelma Farley Bates. She is a native of Winston-Salem, and had attended church at Bethel Church of the Living God and was pastured by brother James E. Roberts. Jean was an 18 year survivor of lung cancer and had only one lung. She is an avid dog lover and will be greatly missed by her best friend ""Ci Ci"". Jean is preceded in death by brother Forest Bates; and two sisters Elizabeth Bates Flynt and Bernice Bates. She is survived by her husband Jerry Looper; two sons Ronnie Shumate and wife Susan and Wayne Shumate; daughter Karen Shumate Adams and husband Patrick; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday June 24, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Carl Miller (of Winston-Salem First) officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
