WINSTON-SALEM--Mrs. Thelma Holder Jackson, known to most as Bobbie, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014. She was born in Winston-Salem on December 14, 1922, the 3rd of 6 children of Raymond and Bess Holder. She graduated from Hanes High School and lived locally her entire life. She married John Madison (J.M.) Jackson, Jr. in 1941 and they were married until his death in 2000. She and J.M. were part of what Tom Brokaw has labeled as ""the greatest generation any society ever produced."" They had experiences that pushed them to their limits: a world at war, an economic downturn that makes the current look mild by comparison, social upheaval, poverty, and deprivation. They also remember a time when communities were closer, when air and water were cleaner, and when people didn't lock their doors. They grew up working, and working hard. They had common values of duty, honor, personal responsibility and marriage. They also had great faith. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Jackson Williams and her parents. Mrs. Jackson is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Ron Frazier; son-in-law, Mac Williams; two granddaughters, Lindsay Williams and Wallis Williams Vore (Sean). Her granddaughters brought her great joy with their love, humor, and great musical talents and accomplishments. Among her siblings and their spouses, she is survived by her brother, Hugh Holder and her sister-in-law, Mrs. James A. (Nancy B.) Holder. Bobbie was like many of the greatest generation, a resourceful problem solver. She had great talents in sewing and gardening and enjoyed them immensely. She loved her family, and her church. J.M. often joked that she had a key to the church doors so she could open them up and was often the last to leave. She loved music and community and she made her family and her church the focal points in her life. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister and friend who will be sorely missed. She also made the best pimento cheese, egg and potato salads, and of course, red velvet cake. There will be a private graveside service. The family will receive friends at Parkway Presbyterian Church from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM on Friday, May 23, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Bobbie's memory to Parkway Presbyterian Church, 1000 Yorkshire Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or the Alzheimer's Association of Western North Carolina, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC 28215-3220. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the family of Mrs. Jackson. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
