WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Mrs. Thelma Estelle Hanks, 74, of Winston-Salem, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, June 28, 2016. Thelma was born in Haleyville, Alabama on May 10, 1942 to the late Henry Moody and Vercie Daly Moody. Following her birth, the family moved to Detroit, Michigan to work in the automobile industry. Thelma was an educator most of her life, working with children and having started four day care centers in various states. She taught disabled children in the Indianapolis Baptist Schools in Indianapolis, Indiana. Thelma served with her husband in the Independent Baptist ministry. Mrs. Hanks is survived by her husband of 53 years, whom she married at the High Street Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri, Fred A Hanks, Sr.; three children, Fred A Hanks, Jr., Stephen Hanks and Rhonda Sue Hanks; two grandchildren, Brett Hanks and Farrin Long; and one great-grandson, Levi Alexander Kirk. A celebration of Thelma's life will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2016, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Michael Knight officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center, 231 Melrose St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
