Ted Junior Dyson

Ted Junior Dyson, 83 of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away at his home on Friday, May 27, 2016. Ted was born on November 18, 1932 in Reddies River, NC to Lois Dyson Smith. He grew up in Winston-Salem and attended Reynolds High School before volunteering to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1952 during the Korean War. In the Navy, he served on board the aircraft carrier, USS Bonhomme Richard (CVA-31), homeported in San Diego, CA and operating in the western Pacific. He took follow-on shore assignments to Japan and South Korea before returning home in 1955. While on active duty, he earned the Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. Returning home, Ted graduated high school in 1956 and ""hopped"" curb at Staley's Stratford Road drive in restaurant where he met his future wife, Nona. He married Nona Jessup in August 1965. After stints at Pep Boys Auto Shop and Food Fair supermarket, he was hired as a store clerk for the local Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Board in 1968. He worked for ABC for 27 years, retiring as a Store Manager in 1995. In his retirement years, he continued to work at ABC in a part time capacity for another 12 years, frequented an array of local diners, particularly Cagney's Restaurant, and became the care provider for his wife when her health declined in 2007. Ted was a devoted husband to Nona, his wife of 49 years before her death on May 7, 2015. He was a giving and loving father to his only daughter, Commander Teddie Lois Dyson, U.S. Navy (retired) of Alexandria, VA and a loyal and supportive son to his mother, Lois and her husband Leo Smith who he cared for in their late years. Throughout his life, Ted was a progressive thinker, an avid reader, a coffee drinker and a good man. He was an inspiration for his daughter through his love of books and history and sacrificed much to ensure she had a good childhood and the best education. His ""sea stories"" inspired her to join the Navy, see the world and pursue her dreams. He is survived by his daughter, Teddie and his sisters and brother-in-law, Sarah Collins of Mt Airy, NC and Nina and Roger Reeves of Pilot Mtn, NC. His daughter is particularly grateful for the caregiving team at Home Instead Senior Care of Lexington, especially Denise Clodfelter and Leila Williams, who provided thoughtful care to her mother and father in their last years. A memorial service will be held for Ted at the Chapel of Memories at Parklawn Memorial Park on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Tim Davis officiating. Following the service, Ted and his wife, Nona will be placed side by side in the mausoleum. A time of reflection with the family will be from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Navy-Marine Corp Relief Society at nmcrs.org. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is assisting the Dyson family.
