Mrs. Susan McClelland Heath 79, known as Sue to her friends, passed away June 14, 2012 after a stay at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. She was born on January 9, 1933 in Red Oak, Iowa to Marion Frances McClelland and Gladys Gibson McClelland and has been a resident of Winston-Salem, NC since 1973. Sue attended Nebraska Wesleyan University and the University of Nebraska and taught school in Kearney and Lincoln, Nebraska. As an active member of Piedmont Craftsmen, Sue was often seen at the craftmen's fair manning a booth that contained beautiful lifelike birds carved by her husband and meticulously painted by her. Their work was so amazing one of their birds, a cardinal that represented the state of North Carolina, was chosen to adorn the White House Christmas tree in 2002. Sue was an original member of the Huntcliff Garden Club where she served as a former president and, for 20 years, shared her love of flowers and gardening. While a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church, Sue served in various capacities. She was a director of the 3-year old preschool at the Calvary Baptist Day School, voluntarily taught art to the first graders, and served on the Day School Committee, a committee that functions like a school board to oversee operations of the school. She was involved in the prayer ministry, taught Sunday School, served as a Christmas program hostess, and was a member of the Evangelism and the Nominating Committees. As a Calvary member, she went on numerous lay mission trips to Kenya, Africa to teach Bible and do village-to-village evangelism. Sue was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her loving husband of 55 years, Chuck Heath; one son, Rodney C. Heath and wife, Debra, of East Bend, NC; a daughter, Laura S. Hylton, and husband, Rush; two grandsons, Matthew R. Hylton and Heath A. Hylton; and one sister, Marion McGinnis, all of Winston-Salem. The family will greet friends at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway on Monday, June 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service for Sue will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller. Rev. Gary Byrum will officiate. Following the service a private entombment will be at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Clemmons. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Calvary Baptist Day School, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
