Susan Marion Sawyer Beckerdite, 77, of Winston-Salem went to her eternal home Wednesday, March 18, 2009 surrounded by loving family. She attended Hanes High School in Winston-Salem where she played basketball and was on the swim team. She was a loving mother to her three daughters and passed on to them her love of life and enduring optimistic spirit. She was born February 25, 1932 in Aiken County in Ridge Springs, SC to Robert Brooks and Evelyn Williams Sawyer. Ms. Beckerdite retired from Western Electric and Eckerd Drug. She resided and worked in the Columbia SC area for 20 years. She was known by family as Granny B and loved NASCAR. Her lifetime wish was to move to the beach which she accomplished in 2008. She was an avid Tony Stewart fan and passed her love for NASCAR on to her grandchildren. She spent lots of loving quality time with her grandchildren watching and attending race related events and loved fishing from any pier she could find. She was able to spend time at the beach over the past year with family doing the things she loved. Surviving are three daughters, Susan J. Whicker (William) of Calabash, NC, Phyllis Jo Prosser (Terry) of West Columbia, SC, and Theresa Ann Beckerdite (Paul Easter) of Winston-Salem, NC. Four grandchildren, Andrea Jo Keisler of West Columbia, SC, William Neil Whicker (Heather Penland), Rachael Johnson and Paul Harden Easter (Trey) III of Winston Salem, NC, three sisters, Dorothy Batten of Winston-Salem, NC, Ann Sawyer of Lexington, NC and Mary Allen of King, NC, four brothers Robert B. Sawyer, Jr. of Mobile, AL, Thomas E. Sawyer of Houston,TX, Francis D. Sawyer of Lexington, NC, and James W. Sawyer (deceased). Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. and services at 12:00 p.m. at Parklawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice of Wilmington, NC, 1414 Physicians Dr, Wilmington, NC 28401 or to the charity of choice. Special thanks to Brunswick Community Hospital for their wonderful loving care and to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
