Sue McGrady Miller Smith

WINSTON-SALEM-Mrs. Sue McGrady Miller Smith, 85, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at her residence. Mrs. Smith was born on February 19, 1930 in Akron, Ohio to the late James Andrew ""Andy"" McGrady and Bessie Mae Andrews McGrady. She spent the early part of her life in Sparta, NC where she graduated from Sparta High School. She graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College with a B.S. Degree in Science Education and a B.S. Degree in English Education. Sue taught school for thirty five years in Stokes and Yadkin counties. She substituted for ten more years in Forsyth County. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church where she was active in many areas. She was a ruling elder, moderator of the Presbyterian Women, and a member of both the Church School Committee and the Witness and Service Committee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Miller. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, James William ""Bill"" Smith of the home; two daughters, Anne Miller Shore (Boyce) and Beth Miller Holcomb (Van); one step-son, Steve Smith; one step-daughter, Janice Walker (Steve); a brother, Kenneth McGrady (Gwenn); one step-brother, Phillip O'Brien; 10 grandchildren, Erin Holcomb, Jeremy Shore, Samuel Shore, Mariah Shore, Hailey Shore, Seth Shore, Simeon Shore, Elizabeth Shore, Stephen Smith (Christine) and Stephanie Brinkley (Chad); two great-grandchilren, Reese Brinkley and Tabor Brinkley; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, March 6, 2015 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bruce Benton officiating. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at William Moxley Memorial Cemetery in Sparta, NC.
