Sue McLean Hall

Sue McLean Hall, age 91, died on November 1, 2015 in Wilson, N.C. She was born in North Wilkesboro on November 25, 1923 to the late John David McLean and Mattie Vannoy McLean. Sue graduated as valedictorian from Millers Creek High School and then enrolled in Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) at age fifteen. Even though she had to work to pay her own way, she graduated summa cum laude. She began her teaching career in North Wilkesboro with sixty students in a one-room school. In 1949, she married Walter Wayne Hall of North Wilkesboro, and they moved to Winston-Salem. Sue taught kindergarten and first grade at Oak Summit, Mineral Springs, and Whitaker Elementary Schools. She loved children and being in the classroom. After she retired in 1981, she returned to the classroom as a reading specialist. Following her second retirement, she taught in the Mothers' Morning Out Program at Ardmore Baptist Church, where she was an active member and a fourth grade Sunday School teacher for many years. She was selected for membership in Delta Kappa Gamma, national teacher honor society. Nothing pleased her more than teaching children to read, especially her own four grandchildren.
Sue also loved sports, especially Barton College soccer as well as ACC and NBA basketball. She enjoyed reading, cooking, and spending time with her family, especially the annual week at Kiawah Island. She played Scrabble, Upwords, and Taboo masterfully.
Sue was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Wayne, of almost fifty-six years, and her brother, Frederick Carl McLean of North Wilkesboro. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Betty Jean Hall Crosby and husband, Jerry, of Charlotte, and her son, Gary Wayne Hall and wife, Jean, of Wilson. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Dr. Susan Crosby Alexander and husband, Heath, of Asheville, Andrew Parker Hall of Wilson, Katherine Colson Crosby of Greenville, S.C., and Ashley McLean Hall of Wilson. The family would like to thank Amy Loflin, Grace Hannah, and Trish Speaks for their love and care.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 7 at 11:00 A.M. at Ardmore Baptist Church in Winston-Salem with the Rev. Ty Talton and the Rev. Christa Warise officiating.
