Mrs. Sudie Marie Smith Hutchens, 90, died on February 16, 2018, at her residence. Sudie was born on December 28, 1927, in Yadkin County to Bennet Eli and Winnie Louise Long Smith. Sudie grew up working on her family's farm and helped care for her younger siblings. Her family cannot remember a time she was not working, she retired from Western Electric with 46 years of service. In her free time, Sudie loved gardening, spending time with her family, and trips to the beach. Above all, she loved her family and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in which she imparted her love of life and the importance of family. Sudie was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 37 years, James Hutchens; three brothers, Charles, Garrell, and John; and five sisters, Beulah, Nora, Cora, Ruth, and Nancy. Surviving are one son, Ken Hutchens (wife Myra); one daughter, Gwen Opengari (husband Roger); three grandchildren, Mike Opengari (wife Kayla), Heather Tucker (husband Brad), and Jamee Hutchens; three great-grandchildren, Madison Tucker, Kenziee Matthews, and Ty Opengari; two brothers, David Smith (wife Bonnie) and George Smith; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 3pm on Tuesday, February 20, 2018, at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Monday, February 19, 2018, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek. In addition to flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Palliative CareCenter, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
