Mr. Steven Eugene Stewart, 72, of Elkin, NC claimed his eternal home in Heaven on October 19, 2024. He passed away at Hugh Chatham Hospital.
Steve was born September 11, 1952, in Winston-Salem, NC to Mae Larimore “Libby” Morgan and the late Colonel Eugene Stewart, Jr. He graduated from Pfeiffer University in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Steve was an active student during his college years; his accomplishments include president of his freshman class, vice president of the Association of Men Students, and WSPC radio announcer. He was also on the golf team, worked in the library, and was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. After college, he worked in sales and as a counselor at multiple funeral homes.
Steve’s ability to wear many hats eventually led him to the North Carolina Revenue Department, where he served as a Revenue Officer for 29 years. Alongside his revenue career, he owned and operated A+ Lawn Service with his son and enjoyed several years as a radio announcer for country radio station 104.1 WTQR. He was always a hard worker, and his life reflected that. He sought out opportunities to serve the Lord, and his love of God was largely instilled in him by his grandmother, whom he called Mamaw. She taught him about Jesus Christ, the Bible, and the power of prayer. Thanks to her example, Steve’s love of the Lord continued to grow throughout his life. He wrote that the most profound moment of his life was when he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on March 27, 2018.
Steve was an active member of Austin Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir, operated the church sound system, and gave his time to local food pantries. He loved his animals and enjoyed working on projects around the house. Left to cherish his memory is his mother Libby Morgan, his son who he was very proud of, Drew Stewart, of Southport, and many friends who were special to him. Steve was a loving son, father, and friend, and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He lived by Proverbs 3:5-6, and we rejoice that he is now in the arms of his Savior.
A private service will be held for Steve at Austin Baptist Church, 500 Roaring Gap Church Rd, Elkin, NC 28621. There will be a private family committal held at Loves United Methodist Church in Walkertown, NC. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Austin Baptist Church in Elkin, NC.
