Colfax – Stephen Matthew Tate, 80, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born on December 3, 1944, in Gaston County to the late Matthew Zol and Thelma Key Tate. Stephen graduated from Ashley High School and was an outstanding football player during his time there, still holding some school records to this day. He went on to play during his college years at Lees-McRae College and Appalachian State University as well. In 1965, Stephen signed a contract to play with the Philadelphia Eagles, but due to some extensive injuries, he wasn’t able to continue his playing career. Stephen was also an avid fan of Duke basketball. He was a hard worker; at one time owning a recording studio, and was very proud of his work with the Salvation Army Boys Club. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He will be missed by so many.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Cox Tate.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sister, Judy Tate Bryant of Kernersville; two brothers, Charlie Tate (Angela) of Kernersville, and Jerry Tate (Jan) of Sarasota, FL; one son, Steven Tate; two grandchildren, Sarah Cavataio (Tony), and Nicholas Tate; one great granddaughter; two nieces, Crystal Perry (David), and Misty Tate Long (Brandon); two nephews, Corey Tate (Ashley), and Logan Tate (Abbey); three great nephews, and four great nieces.
There will be no formal services. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made in his honor to Shady Grove Wesleyan Church 119 N Bunker Hill Rd, Colfax, NC 27235. Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel is assisting the family.
