KERNERSVILLE-Stephen Joe Conaway, 63, died Thursday, September 22, 2011. He was born July 4, 1948 in St. Mary's, West Virginia to the late Thomas and Mabel Conaway. In 1972, he married Peggy Phillips Conaway, the love of his life. The couple lived in West Virginia until they moved to North Carolina in 1979. They have been active members of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church since settling in Kernersville. Steve graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1971 and started his career with the West Virginia Department of Transportation. He then went on to work for thirty years in various roles with consulting engineering companies, finishing his career in 2002 at Stantec in Winston Salem. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. After retirement, Steve volunteered weekly with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Steve's most important and fulfilling role was as a husband, father, and grandfather to his family. Steve is survived by his wife of 39 years, Peggy of the home; his two sons, Shawn Michael Conaway and wife, Naomi Harris of Hamilton, Victoria Australia, Kevin Joe Conaway and wife, Merrie Manning of Greensboro; his daughter, Leigh Conaway Armistead and husband, Shaun Kevin of Asheville; four grandchildren, Zoe Isabella Harris Conaway and Dellah Abigayle Harris Conaway of Hamilton, Victoria Australia and Charles Manning Conaway and Margaret Manning Conaway of Greensboro; two brothers, Jeff Conaway of St. Mary's, WV, and Randy Conaway and wife, Sue of Kingsport, TN; one sister, Teresa Conaway Kuntz and husband Mark of Bridgeport, WV; and 8 nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church with Rev. Dave Cash and Rev. Mark Evans officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
