Mrs. Stella Opiela Fleming, 84, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born November 4, 1924 in Dupont, PA. where she was a 1942 graduate of Lincoln High School. Mrs. Fleming was a telephone operator and a union representative for telephone operators. She was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Winston-Salem where she was active in the Saint Theresa Guild, The Golden Club and The Rosary Group. She was a supporter of her Church and her Church community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Fleming, Sr. Survivors include one son, Thomas Fleming of the home; one daughter, Jane Fleming of Austin, TX; two grandchildren, Frank and Ruth Sanchez of Austin, TX.; two sisters-in-law, Pat Cairns of Brick Township, NJ and Louise Opiela of CT and many nieces and nephews. Our mother was an intelligent, hardworking, determined woman who made sure that her children and grandchildren were exposed to history, the arts and all of the good things that life has to offer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Thursday at 11:00 am at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church by Father Alex Ayala. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 pm at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway.
