Winston-Salem, NC: Crane: Mrs. Spicie Rochester Essex Crane passed away on Friday, December 23, 2011. She was born May 20, 1914 in Cashiers, NC to the late James Martin and Lucy Rochester. Her mother died when Spicie was only 14 and she helped raise her siblings. She later moved to Winston-Salem, NC and worked for R.J Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. She married Cecil Essex in 1955. They attended Clemmons Baptist Church. She worked in the garden and canned and froze many vegetables and fruits. After he was widowed, she later moved to West Union, SC and married Fred Crane, a friend from her early life. Funeral Services will be conducted 2:00 pm Tuesday, December 27 in the Chapel of Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway officiated by Rev. Bill McElveen. The Family will receive friends at 1:30 pm before the service. The Graveside Service will be conducted following the funeral at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons, NC. She leaves to cherish her memory, six step-children, Peggy Smith, Jo Ann Smith, Gene Crane, Johnny Crane, Darell Crane and Debbie Rowland and one deceased step-daughter, Jennie Jones. She had six deceased sisters and five deceased brothers. She has three living sisters, Frances Burleson, Edith Parker, and Faye Reese and two brothers, Johnny Rochester and Melvin Rochester. She had 19 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Memorials can be made to Salemtowne, The Moravian Home, 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or a charity of your choice.
