Shirley Simmons

Mrs. Shirley Rae Flinchum Simmons, age 84, of Pilot Mountain, widow of the late J.E. Simmons, Jr. left her earthly home and went to be with her Lord Saturday, December 16, 2017. She was a shining example of Christian faith, devotion and strength in her church, community, and family. She lived to serve her Lord and help others. She was born May 28, 1933 in Surry County to the late William Henry Flinchum and Lula Denny Flinchum. She was an employee of Hanes Hosiery, Inc. for several years before becoming a fulltime homemaker. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother for the remainder of her life. She was a faithful member of Friendly Chapel Church for over 50 years. Mrs. Simmons is survived by two daughters, Joy Simmons Smith, and husband Dennis of Dobson, and Joan Simmons Simpson, and husband Randy of Pilot Mountain. In addition, she is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Matthew Smith and wife Ashley of Kannapolis, NC, and Adam Smith, and wife Jenae of Pilot Point, TX., Hannah Simpson of Pilot Mountain; one special great-granddaughter, Ava Smith of Pilot Point TX.; one devoted brother, Spencer Flinchum and wife Frances of Pilot Mountain; a special sister-in-law, Gaye Nell Flinchum, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Simmons is preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, J.E. Simmons, Jr.; one sister, Virginia Flinchum Hill; one brother, Rex Flinchum; one half-sister Pearl F. Royston; six half-brothers, Willis Flinchum, Elmer Flinchum, Everette Flinchum, Bill Flinchum, Vester Flinchum, and Bert Flinchum. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Friendly Chapel Church with Brother Don Collins, Brother Ryan Whitt, and Brother Tim Morrison officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Primitive Baptist Church with Brother Jerry Pardue officiating the service. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening, December 19, 2017, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Friendly Chapel Church.
