WALKERTOWN - Shirley Ann Thornton, 81, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Kate B Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem, NC. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and sister. She was born August 28, 1942, in Mercer County, WV, to the late Haskue and Elsie Harmon. She graduated from Spanishburg High School and spent many years working in the public school system and preschool centers.
She was devout in her faith and a member of Believer’s Baptist Church. She found lifelong friends and much comfort from her church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Barry Thornton, Sr.; her son, Barry Thornton, Jr.; four brothers, Dennis Harmon, Darrel Harmon, David Harmon and Dewey Harmon.
She is survived by her son, Zed Thornton of Walkertown; daughter-in-law, Lisa Thornton, wife of the late Barry Thornton, Jr. of Belews Creek; three grandsons, Justin Thornton (wife, Ashlea) of Belews Creek, Jared Thornton (wife, Nikki) of Stokesdale, and Jason Thornton (wife, Ellen) of Kernersville; eight great-grandchildren, Madison Thornton, Mackenzie Trent, Isaiah Honeycutt, Ashlyn Thornton, Savannah Thornton, Marley Bull, Levi Thornton and Kimber Thornton; one sister, Brenda Harmon of Princeton, WV; one brother, Dean Harmon of Brooksville, FL; four sisters-in-law, Linda Harmon, Sarah Harmon, Stella Thornton, and Melva Thornton; and many nieces and nephews.
The family requests you join them for a graveside service at Mt. Gur Cemetery in Kernersville, NC on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Don McGee officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Disabled American Veterans at 251 N. Main St. #116 Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
