Shelton passed August 25, 2023 at home under Hospice Care by Trellis Supportive Care.
Shelton was born August 5, 1935 in Dunn (Harnett County), NC, the only son to the late James Floyd and Iva Jane Weaver Barefoot. He was predeceased by sisters Ernestine Johnson, Evadine Tart, and Ruth Allen. His surviving sister, Jeannette Tripp, resides in Dunn, NC, and many nieces and nephews in various states.
Shelton is survived by his wife, Elizabeth of the home, son Harvey Craig of Oak Ridge, NC, granddaughter Raven Nicole, and great granddaughter, Sofie Rhys Lipscomb.
Shelton attended grammar schools in Meadow and Newton Grove and graduated from Dunn High School in 1953. He attended many continuing education classes and seminars required in various employment positions. Shelton's combined employment career spanned 43 years as a rail electrician specialist with Atlantic Coastline Railroad traveling from Virginia to Alabama, and 37 of those years with Unisys Corp. (formerly Burroughs Corp.) , where he advanced from technician to Service Manager of the Eastern United States.
Shelton was a veteran of the United States Army ranking from private to sergeant stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC and Ft. Bragg, NC. He was training instructor for new recruits in Airborne Cadre and squad leader in basic training. An automobile accident altered his plan to enter Army helicopter pilot training.
Shelton was active in retirement since November 1997, serving 4 years on the Lewisville Planning Board, 4 years as a Lewisville Town Councilman, member of American Legion Post 522, West Bend Masonic Lodge 434, Historical Society, Civic Club, Concord United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge No. 2679, Calabash, NC.
A service of Worship & Thanksgiving will be at 11:00 a.m., September 2, 2023, at Concord Methodist Church, Lewisville, NC with Rev. Edward Evans, Concord's Pastor, and nephew Rev. Jamie Allen of Tennessee officiating. Interment will follow at the Church Columbarium. Visitation following interment will follow/ in the Church Family Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Concord Methodist Church, 8955 Concord Church Road, Lewisville, NC 27023, West Bend Masonic Lodge 434, 6305 Shallowford Rd, Lewisville, NC 27023, or Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
