Mr. Shellie Lewis Ammons, Jr., 61, of Walnut Cove died Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 29, 1947 in Rockingham County to Shellie Lewis Ammons, Sr. and Pattie Hanes Ammons. Mr. Ammons graduated in 1965 with the first graduating class of South Stokes High School. He was employed by the Stokes County Sheriff's Department from 1975 until 1988 as a Deputy Sheriff and Detective. From 1989 until 1994 he was proprietor of Hwy 64 East Amoco in Raleigh. He was a Correctional Officer for the state of NC from 1995 until 1998 and was a Probation and Parole Officer for Stokes County from 1998 until 2007. He loved riding his motorcycle, fishing on the coast, boating on the lake and playing canasta. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include one son, Lewis Brook Ammons and wife, Kimberly of Stokes County; one daughter, Shannon Nicole Ammons of Greensboro; one grandaughter, Eliza Jane Ammons-Leitch of Greensboro; his mother of Winston-Salem; two brothers, George Ammons of FL and William Ammons and wife, Becky of Pfafftown; two sisters, Martha Sapp and husband, David of GA and Margaret Ammons and husband, Buck Butler of Winston-Salem; three nephews, David Sapp III, Charlie Dillon and Dermont Dillon and two nieces, Pattie McCrady and Whitney Ammons. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 AM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Mark Blair officiating. Burial will follow in Hanes Family Cemetery in Pine Hall. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to The American Heart Association, 202 CentrePort Drive, Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27409.
