Oak Ridge-Shaun Davis Vazquez's, passing on October 19, 2012 was due to a tragic accident, and she is missed tremendously by her family. She was a loyal friend, a funny and cheerful companion, and a bright ray of sunshine in many people's lives. We still feel her love surrounding us, and sense her presence around us daily. We patiently await the day when we will be reunited with our ShaunShine in Heaven. Known by most as Shaunee, this exuberant 18 year old was attending The Matrona, School of Midwifery in Asheville, NC. Though Shaun's grades and SAT scores qualified her to attend the college or university of her choice, she chose her own, nontraditional, life path. She decided during her senior year at Northwest Guilford H.S. that becoming a midwife, rather than a surgeon, would bring her the most satisfaction. It seemed to be a perfect career choice for Shaun, as she was delivered at home by a midwife on August 2nd, 1994, and as a child, Shaunee could always be found cuddling a baby doll, kitten, puppy, rabbit or baby chick. In her teenage years, Shaun volunteered her free time at the Village Vet in Oak Ridge and helped in the church nursery. Shaunee received many awards throughout her school career; she was an exemplary student, an AP scholar, Editor of the Arts and Culture section of the school newspaper, a four year Honors Drama Student (voted best actress for several productions), and a Teacher's Choice Award recipient. She graduated this June, with Honors. Always creative, Shaunee would dream up a design for jewelry, clothing, a painting, or a unique font, spend a little time perfecting it, and then create something spectacular. When she wore her funky, handmade clothes and jewelry out in public, within the day, someone would ask to buy whatever it was that she had created. Even in high school, Shaunee was custom-making and selling her creations to her friends and classmates. A shop in Asheville bought and sold her gorgeous, complicated millefiori beads and pendants at a high price. Over the past 8 years our phone was frequently ringing with someone seeking her help with an animal trauma, and due to her pleadings our home was frequently an animal hospital and/or foster home. She assisted in several canine births, instinctively taking emergency action to save the lives of at least 3 newborn puppies, all from different litters. She and her older sister bottle-fed nine newborn orphaned puppies, around the clock, for 7 weeks, and then found loving homes for all nine bouncy, chubby, healthy puppies. She set the wing of an injured bird, who still frequents our feeder daily; 2 years after being rehabilitated. While living in Asheville, Shaun did just as she did here. She nursed injured, ill, or malnourished animals back to health. The last time Shaunee came home to visit, she was carrying a tiny, palm-sized kitten with her in a special sling/kitten carrier she had designed. ~ If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; if I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting robin into his nest again. I shall not live in vain. ~ Emily Dickinson She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Shaun S. Kenny 10/01/92; grandmother, Davis Hale 10/08/92; and cousin, Seamus M. Davey 10/21/05. Surviving are her parents, Will and Erin Vazquez; her sisters, Kenleigh and Sophie Vazquez; her grandparents, Wilhelm and Mary Vazquez; and her pets, Mitzi, Mary Jane, Delilah, Leo, Iculus, Fluffhead, and Grey. Her Celebration of Life service will be held at First Christian Church in Kernersville, on Saturday, November 10, 2012. Seating will begin at 12:30 PM, with the service beginning at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be held between 2:30 and 4:30 PM. The church is located at 1130 N. Main St., Kernersville phone: 336-996-7388 We give our thanks to the incredible staff of Mission Hospital MedSurg ICU, for their inexhaustible efforts to save this precious life, and their kindness and patience in our time of deepest sorrow. We also wish to thank our family and friends who traveled far and wide to be by her bedside. Memorial Flowers for the chapel or contributions to the SPCA of the Triad, PO Box 4461, Greensboro, NC 27404 in Shaun's name are greatly appreciated.
