Sara Chappell Jeanette “Jan” Winning passed away peacefully on January 18, 2021 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s and the COVID virus. She was born April 11, 1935, in Greenwood, SC to William and Odell Chappell. Jan graduated from Greenwood High School. Following high school, Jan attended Anderson Memorials Hospital in Anderson, SC and graduated with a major in Nursing (RN). Jan was a staff nurse for several years and while there, met her husband to be, James R. Winning who was attending Clemson University. On September 3, 1960, Jan and Jim were married and moved to Greenville, SC, and Jan went to work as a staff nurse at Memorial Mission Hospital. Over the next years, Jan and Jim had two sons, James R. Winning, Jr. and Jeffrey William Winning. In November 1972, the family moved to Winston-Salem, NC where Jan worked as a staff nurse at NC Baptist Hospital. Jan was very active in Women’s club, both locally and statewide which she did as she worked. Old Town Women’s club and the North Carolina Federation of Women’s Club, INC. organizations were two she enjoyed serving women the most. After retiring from staff nursing, Jan taught CAN classes at Forsyth Technical Community College for five years and then retired. Jan is survived by her husband, Dr. James R. Winning; son, James R. Winning, Jr.; son, Jeffrey W. Winning; and granddaughter, Madeline N. Winning. A private graveside will be held in Winston-Salem, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, Pilot Mountain Office, 129 Veterans Drive, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. Her Hospice Team was extremely supportive. The family expresses sincere gratitude for all the support, prayers, and visits from faithful friends and family.
