Sarah W. Harmon Hayes, ""Billie"", age 87, died peacefully at the Henry Etta and Bruce Hinkle Hospice House in Davidson County, North Carolina on February 12, 2011. She was born in Sugar Grove, North Carolina on March 5, 1923. Her parents were the late Orren J. Harmon and Emma Shull Harmon. She attended Appalachian State Teachers College, (Appalachian State University), graduated cum laude in 1944, and was also named to ""Who's Who in American Colleges."" Ms. Hayes was a career educator who taught at Lowrance, Kernersville, Skyland and North Elementary Schools in Forsyth County. Ms. Hayes was a faithful member of the Bethany II Sunday School Class at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was a sports enthusiast and an avid ""Tarheel"" basketball fan. She was happiest when in the company of her beloved nieces. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jamie H. Henson; brothers-in-law, Thomas Albert Henson and Norman L. Wilson; and a niece, Jayne M. Henson. Ms. Hayes is survived by two sisters, Mattie L. Wilson of Vilas, NC and Emogene Thomas and husband Hayden of Lexington, NC; and by three nieces, Tricia Wilson of Linville, NC, Lydia Sumcad of Charlotte, NC, and Laura Rogers and husband Tad of Indian Trail, NC. She is also survived by four great nieces, Kelsey Koontz and Annie Sumcad of Charlotte, NC and Alli and Bailey Rogers of Indian Trail, NC. A funeral service will be conducted 10:30 am Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC, with the Reverend Gary Byrum officiating. A burial service and interment will be held, following the service, 3:00 PM Tuesday in Watauga County at the Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family immediately following the funeral service at Calvary Baptist Church, or following burial and interment at Cove Creek Baptist Church.
