Mrs. Sarah Lucy Hampton Genung, 81, of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday morning, August 24, 2011, at Baptist Hospital, surrounded by her nine children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sarah was born in New Albany, Indiana, July 12, 1930, to the late Joseph and Hazel Hampton. Sarah, also known as Mom, Grannie and GG, spent her life surrounding her family with love, support and guidance. The family holds dear many memories of a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Sarah enjoyed cooking for a host of guests, entering award-winning roses at the fair, sewing quilts for her children and grandchildren, gardening, reading, riding roller coasters, and appreciating humor in everyday situations. In death, Sarah has joined her husband of fifty years, Clarence Wilbur. She is also preceded in death by her parents and her sister Joanne. Surviving are her 5 sons: Dennis of Winston-Salem; David and wife Ginny of Clemmons; Dale of King; Daryl and wife Teresa of Walnut Cove; Douglas and wife Ella of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are her 4 daughters: Diane Gideon of Lexington, KY; Denise Poore of Winston-Salem; Darla of Winston-Salem; and Danetta of Kernersville. Sarah is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; brothers, Buddy and Billy and sisters Velma and Mary of New Albany, IN; and many loving extended family members. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 26, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. A celebration of her life will be held at Bethabara Moravian Church in Winston-Salem on Saturday, August 27, at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Joint Fellowship of Bethabara Moravian Church, 2100 Bethabara Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106-2702 (336-924-8789).
