Ms. Sarah Elizabeth Coltrane of Winston-Salem, NC, died unexpectedly Saturday night, August 2, 2014 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Sarah was born March 27, 1933 and was the daughter of Jeffrey Smith Coltrane, Sr. and Sarah Nettie Hendricks Coltrane. She was a graduate of Old Town High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She was also a graduate of High Point College, now University, receiving an AB Degree in Social Studies and in 1974 she earned a M.Ed. Degree in Counseling and Psychology at Georgia State University, Atlanta. She began her professional career with the American Red Cross and in 1963 she joined the Fulton County Adult Probation Department in Atlanta. In 1972, she joined the Georgia Department of Corrections as a social worker, also in Atlanta. Following retirement she worked for the J.C. Penney Company and its subsidiary Thrift Drug, Inc. as a field auditor. In 1995, Sarah moved back to the Winston-Salem area and became an active member of St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Clemmons where she was a former member of the vestry.
Sarah was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Virginia C. Mock and Helen E. Coltrane; two brothers, William J. and Robert M. Coltrane; a sister-in-law, Jean Jones Coltrane; and a niece, Elizabeth Ann Philpott. She is survived by sister, Emma C. Philpott and husband Harry; brother, Jeffrey S. Coltrane, Jr.; brother-in-law, Linnaeus F. Mock, Sr.; sister-in-law, Patsy S. King; two nieces; four nephews; seven grandnieces; two grandnephews; one great grandniece; and several cousins.
A memorial service will take place 2 pm Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Jamie Edwards of St. Clement's Episcopal Church officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Clement's Episcopal Church, Box 1547, 3600 Harper Road, Clemmons, NC 27012, or to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106, or a charity of the donor's choice.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff at Bermuda Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where Ms. Coltrane was a resident for the past two years, and thanks also to the clergy and members of St. Clement's Episcopal Church for their love and support.
