Sara Boyd Ferner was born in Patterson, NJ, the second of four children of Frank Sherwood Boyd of Brooklyn, NY and Mary Hitchcock Boyd of Branford, CT. She attended Dana Hall School, Wellesley, MA and graduated from Wheaton College, Norton, MA in 1957. She retired from the Department of Neurology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine after 18 years. Everyone who knew Sara was touched in some way by her gentle spirit, generosity, kindness, and compassion for those in need. Sara was a devoted mother and grandmother. She found great joy spending time with her family. Her second love was her passion for horses which started at a very young age. In her early years, she was an accomplished equestrian winning many events. In later years, she bred and raised thoroughbred horses. Sara considered her horses some of her very best friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Fredrick Thompkins Boyd and Frank Sherwood Boyd Jr. of Branford, CT. She is survived by her brother James Garfield Boyd II of Branford, CT; her four sons Scott Garrison Ferner and wife Jean Anne of Greensboro, NC, Jeffrey Todd Ferner and wife Shelly of Lewisville, NC, Clayton Stewart Ferner and wife Marni of Wilmington, NC, and Kendal Boyd Ferner and wife Shelley of Charlotte, NC; and her ten grandchildren: Justin, Matthew, Caroline, Tristan, Kara, Jake, Karsen, Corey, Davis, and Brady. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends following the service in the Colhoun Room. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Horse Education & Rescue Organization (H.E.R.O.), P.O. Box 11045, Winston-Salem, NC 27116.
