Many called him Sao, but I called him Ba (Dad). He was the man who taught me to be the person I am
today. My dad has been there for me every day since I was born, and for what my family I have put him
through, I most likely would have gone crazy a long time ago.
We live in a small neighborhood consisting of 6 homes. Whether my dad knew you or not, he would
always smile or wave. He had respect and kindness towards anyone, regardless of their background. As
years go by and as I get older, I’ve been able to see a much different perspective of the man I’ve always
known.
The hardships and endless sacrifices my dad has made for my family and I are appreciated and honored.
He has shaped me into the person I am today. I do not believe we could have ever had a more dedicated
father than mine: his words, his actions, meaning of love, honesty, hard work, and making sacrifices. Our
family was truly blessed to have an amazing father figure whom we could call our friend and our biggest
support system. My dad has been behind our family and accepted us as the people we are. He has been
through music lessons like guitar and violin, bodybuilding, and powerlifting. Regardless of what my
family would be doing, he would always be right next to us every step of the way. From teaching me the
essentials like walking, talking, to the simple joys of fishing and driving a car. With every step of the way,
my dad was right there nodding and smiling; which was his way of being proud.
The one thing I want in life is to make my parents proud and to never disappoint them. Neighbors would
tell my sister and I how proud my dad was when we both graduated college, I got a job, and that my
sister is studying to become a doctor. As a family, we are extremely proud of how he places family first
before himself. I could always count on my dad to be there for everything I did. I am proud of my dad for
his sense of humor and how he could lift the spirits of our family when times were tough.
My dad did not have the easiest childhood nor did he grow up with the lifestyle and opportunities that
my family and I have been blessed with. He would tell my sister and I stories of the hardships of getting
an education in Vietnam, joining the military during the Vietnam War, and escaping the country to the
United States. Despite the obstacles, he was the most joyful and kindhearted person that I’ve ever met
and the person who I am most proud of. My dad would always ask how I was doing, if I ate, or how was
my day; I do not think he will ever know how much that truly meant to me. Ba, I am proud of you for
many reasons. You have done many things in your life: getting your citizenship, getting a patent on a
fitment you invented, and demonstrating characteristics that strongly influenced who my sister and I are
today. You have done an incredible job raising Dana and I. Thank you so much for all that you have given,
thank you for your love and support, but most of all, thank you for being such a wonderful dad.
Sao, is the most wonderful dad in the world. He will forever and always take care of me. My dad has
always respected me and my decisions, and that is why I have so much respect for him. My dad would
drop everything in the world for my family and I. Every day when I wake up, I am thankful for having him
as a father. He is the man that has made me into the person I am today. Sao is my dad, my ba, my
mentor, my friend, and most of all he is my hero.he is survived by his wife, Thuy Vo, of 32 years; his two children, Dana Nguyen and Steven Nguyen.
