Sanford 'Sam' Newell Williams

WILLIAMS - KING Sanford ""Sam"" Newell Williams, 90, passed away on September 5, 2011 in the Palliative Care Unit of Forsyth Medical Center. Sam and his twin brother, Kingdon Deved Williams were born on May 14, 1921 in Elmira, NY to Ernest and Doris Warner Williams. Due to an early illness as an infant, Sam was sent to live with his paternal grandparents, Nellie and Newell Williams in Harpursville, NY. At an early age, Sam had a profound interest in learning to play the trumpet and was the focal part in the Harpursville School Band. He was also the school's star baseball pitcher. After graduation, Sam formed his own jazz band and earned the reputation as the best trumpeter in the state of NY. While in search of a drummer for his band, he met Homer Sands who had a younger sister, Dorothy. He and Dorothy were married on November 4, 1945. Sam began his career in night time security at Bendix Corporation (Amphenol Corporation) in Sidney, NY. Sam also worked for Osterhoudt Funeral Home in Harpursville. Sam's music career became secondary but when called upon to perform, he had the God given ability to play without rehearsal. Given his abandonment as a child, Sam was a loner by nature but excelled in all he chose to pursue. He was an avid sportsman and loved shooting in trap and skeet gun tournaments. He maintained a gun room and loaded his own shotgun and rifle shells. Sam listened to his favorite sport of baseball. He hated the NY Yankees and relished their every loss. A win for the Yankees meant a bad day for Sam. Due to Dorothy's declining health, Sam retired from Amphenol Corporation in 1981 and he and Dorothy moved to King, NC to a warmer climate closer to their daughter. Sam met and made friends quickly and could always find good conversation. He will be most remembered in King for his gift to gab and unrelenting sense of humor. He loved flirting with the ladies and savored getting the attention he missed as a child. Several years after Dorothy's death, he later moved with his daughter to their country home and enjoyed smoking his pipe while watching the birds and squirrels feed from his feeders. Sam was Episcopalian. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Harpursville and a former member of St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church in King. Sam is predeceased in death by his mother and father; his wife of 44 years, Dorothy Sands Williams in 1989; his twin brother Kingdon; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Westfall of Unadilla, NY and Mary Sands Hohenfeldt of Port Orange, FL. He is survived by two daughters, Karen Sue Breese of Harpursville, NY and Rebecca Ann Bouton (Bruce) of King, NC; five grandchildren, Scott Bouton (Wendy) of Kernersville, NC, Candace Stainback (Louis) of Palm Bay, FL, Tina Breese of Harpursville, NY, Michele Fortenbaugh (Randy) of Binghamton, NY and Jennifer Dwyer (AJ) of Binghamton, NY; five great-grandchildren, Kyle, Ryland and Rachel Bouton and Bryna and Alana Dwyer; a brother-in-law, Homer Sands of Smyrna, NY; and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with the Rev. Bill Chatman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12 Noon to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A private graveside service for the family will be held at Crestview Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Palliative Care Unit of Forsyth Medical Center, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to express their gratitude to Pat Faries and Joyce Phillips for providing in-home support to our father and for their kindness, generosity and loyal friendship. And a special thank you is extended to the entire staff at the Forsyth Medical Center Palliative Care Unit for their compassionate care during our father's difficult illness.
