Mr. Samuel Spencer, 80, of Lexington passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Bermuda Commons. Mr. Spencer was born in Randolph County to the late Alfred Alex Spencer and Annie Manuel Spencer on June 21, 1942.
Sam was a devote family man. He was married to his high school sweetheart Carol for 62 years. He loved his kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren. He also had many extended "kids" in his church family. He served faithfully at Grace Baptist Church as teacher, trustee, choir member and greeted as many new people as he could find. He was known as "the candy man" because he passed out pockets full of candy each service.
Sam retired from the Winston-Salem Fire Department and worked as a painter and barber on his days off. He loved to garden and work in the yard. His greatest joy was to share his bounty with others.
He was an avid outdoorsman. As a young man he played baseball and was scouted for his talent. He played softball in many church leagues and loved watching sports and racing on TV. He enjoyed fishing at the coast. He was an avid hunter. In his early days, he did a lot of rabbit and squirrel hunting. His favorite was deer season. He went deer hunting last season at age 80 and killed his limit.
Sam never met a stranger. No matter where he went, he would run into a friend and strike up a conversation or meet a stranger and make a new friend.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers Alfred Alex Spencer Jr. and Walter Lewis Spencer; sisters Magdalene Spencer Tucker, Iredale Spencer Miller, Pearl Spencer Ferree, Doris Spencer Beauchamp, Peggy Spencer Williams, and Linda Spencer Weatherly.
He is survived by his wife Carol Luther Spencer; sons, Steve Spencer (Brenda) and Eric Spencer (Joanie); daughter, Tracie Spencer Cook (Tommy); grandchildren Kirby Hall (Cary), Korinne Talley, Morgan Spencer, and Whitney Spencer; great grandchildren, Noah Hall and Lachlan Hall; Siblings, Shurby Spencer Cagle, Billy Lee Spencer and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Grace Baptist Church. Family will receive friends one hour before. A second funeral service will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, Asheboro, NC. A committal will follow at the church cemetery.
