Mr. Samuel Gray Slater, 67, of Kernersville, NC, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, November 10, 2015. Mr. Slater was born on August 31, 1948 in Forsyth County to Carl Gray Slater and Sue Grey Kiger Slater. Following his graduation from R.J. Reynolds High School, Sam worked as a police officer for the Winston-Salem Police Department. He later worked as an agent for the A.B.C. Law Enforcement Agency until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement, Sam worked at Pine Tree Golf Club and Salem Glen Golf Course. He was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and UNC basketball team. Sam especially enjoyed spending time at the beach with his family and friends. Sam was proud to have made many friends around North Carolina over the years and enjoyed getting together with them and swapping numerous stories. In addition to his father, Sam was preceded in death by his two wives, Barbara Stephens Slater and Nancy Long Slater. Mr. Slater is survived by two daughters, Meredith Slater and Kaitlin Slater; three grandchildren, Vada, Tatum and Avery; his mother, Sue Kiger Ernst; one brother, Mike Slater (Lucy); one sister, Robin Broadstreet (Wesley); and a half-sister, Linda Hammill. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Behind the Blue Line, P.O. Box 15031, Winston-Salem, NC 27113.
