OWENS - Walkertown Mr. Samuel Dee Owens passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Lutheran Home in Winston-Salem. He was born in Forsyth County on March 14, 1927 to the late William Owens and Effie Scott Owens. Mr. Owens graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1944 and retired from Anchor Motor Freight in 1989 with 24 years of service. He was a long time member of Bethany Baptist Church. Mr. Owens was a devoted family man who also loved to garden and fish as well as travel with the Old Glory Travel Club. In addition to his parents, Mr. Owens was preceded in death by one son, David Owens. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Nina Bailey Owens; two daughters, Carol Owens and Susan Chatman and husband, John; two sons, Leonard Owens and wife, Michelle, and Samuel Dee Owens Jr.; a special friend of the family, Larry Hull and his wife, Mary; daughter-in-law, Ann Owens Leonard and husband, Lindy; eleven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; also, three sisters, Beatrice Hawthorne, Rosie Anderson and Peggy Hill. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November 7, at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Don Harvey officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday evening, November 6, from 7 to 9 P.M. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall.
