Sammie Olivia McPherson

Sammie Olivia Nash McPherson, 81, of Winston-Salem, passed away February 28, 2015 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a 9-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Visitation will be held at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem on Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Funeral service will be held at Clemmons United Methodist Church in Clemmons on Friday, March 6, 2015 at 11:00 am with Reverend Paula Northrup officiating. Sammie was born in Eldorado, IL to Samuel and Cecelia Nash on October 7, 1933. She was a dental assistant when she married John McPherson on July 4, 1956 in Springfield, IL. They spent the next 58 years raising their family and working in business together. They purchased JB Armstrong News Agency (1977) in Winston-Salem; later forming Piedmont News Company, Inc. Sammie was the corporation's book buyer for many years. She was an avid reader and was known around town for her commercials on WSJS about the family's K&S Newsstands and Book Talk radio program. She also enjoyed walking, cards, tennis, golf, and spending time with her family and friends. Sammie is preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Cecelia; two sisters Evelyn and Marilyn; and her son Raymond. She is survived by her husband John; son Ted and John Jr; step son Scott; daughter in laws Leigh, Katherine and Catherine; four grandchildren Alexandria Price, Ben McPherson, Jenna McPherson, and Laura McPherson.
