Sam Monroe Matthews of Winston-Salem, NC died tragically on April 2, 2011. Born November 12, 1991 to John Matthews and Tracy Mohr, Sam attended Whitaker Elementary, Wiley Middle School, and Reynolds High School and was completing his freshman year at Lees-McRae College. While at Reynolds High School, Sam was a member of both the wrestling team and golf team. His first love, though, was his BMW, and he spent many an hour toiling away and developing a keen insight into his car, which he loved to share with his family, friends and other BMW enthusiasts. Sam was a loving son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him. Sam is survived by his father and stepmother, Lisa Matthews; mother and stepfather, Philip Mohr; sisters Maggie and Zoie Matthews, and Maribeth and Katie Mohr; grandparents Joby and Gloria Matthews, Phyllis and Terry Russell, Johnny and Nena Allen, Janice and Marshall Southern, and Fred and Velma Mohr; uncles and aunts Gina and Brent Smith, Julie and John Sasser, Ray and Michelle Allen, Mike and Regina Allen, P.D. and Erica Allen, Eric and Amy Southern, Greg and Susan Mohr, Michael and Sheila Mohr, Lisa and Steve Bir, Christopher and Mindi Mohr, and Anne and Rob Rigdon. A private inurnment for the family is planned for Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Centenary Methodist Churchs columbarium. The family will then receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the Churchs parlor, followed by a memorial service for all family and friends to celebrate Sams life at 3 p.m. in the Churchs main sanctuary. The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation for all of the love and support that has flowed from friends, family, co-workers and church communities. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be made either to the American Red Cross or the Hinton Rule Life Center c/o Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 West Fifth Street, Winston-Salem, NC.
