Mr. Rutherford Ogburn Parrish, 89, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday morning, October 31, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 1, 1922 in Walkertown, NC to the late William Rutherford Parrish and Lillian Ogburn Parrish. He was a faithful member of Ardmore United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was a retired Building Inspector for the City of Winston-Salem after working as a home builder. In his spare time, he loved to build things out of wood. One of his masterpieces was a grandfather clock which he lovingly made with walnut wood from a tree he cut himself. His legacy as a skilled woodworker will live on through the many pieces of furniture and other wooden items that he gave to family and friends. Mr. Parrish proudly honored his country in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He served in Patton's Third Army and was the recipient of a Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars for campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul Parrish and William Parrish, his sisters, Ellen Fulk and Peggy Byrd. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Phyllis Nelson Parrish; one daughter, Kathy Horton and husband Roger of Clemmons, NC; two sisters, Elizabeth (Lib) Whicker of Winston-Salem and his twin Rachel Platt of Sewell, NJ; three grandchildren, Shannon Daniels McDonald of Raleigh, Brent Parrish Daniels and wife Jennifer of King and Carrie Horton Slaughter and husband Jase of Raleigh and three great grandchildren, Madeline Avery McDonald of Raleigh and Sidney Victoria Daniels and Aaron James Daniels of King. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Jock Ollis officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church, 630 S.
