Ruth Simpson March Long
She was born on June 12, 1934, in Advance, NC, to the late Jones Dewey and Mary Anna Simpson March. Ruth was the youngest of five siblings: Mary Frances March (Oscar) Fulk, Rachel Winnifred March (Clinton) Hemmings, Jones Dewey March, Jr., and Linda Gray March (R. W.) Peters.
Ruth was married to William Lloyd Long of Dallas, Texas, on June 22, 1953, at First Baptist Church of Cary, NC. She was raised in the Quaker faith at White Plains Friends Meeting in Mt. Airy, NC. After graduating from White Plains High School, she moved to Winston-Salem, NC, to attend Draughon’s Business College. She met Mr. Long in the summer of 1952, while he was playing baseball for the Winston-Salem Cardinal team at Southside Ball Park. They were married the next summer. Ruth joined Ardmore Moravian Church in 1965, where she served actively in the church for many years.
Those left to cherish Ruth’s memory include her daughter, Maryalice Long Adams, of the home; grandson, Lloyd Clay Adams of Winston-Salem; and six nieces and nephews.
Ruth passed away after a long stint of declining health, remaining in her home until the last 4 days of her life. She took great pride in the fact that she was the oldest living member of her generation of March grandchildren. Her grandson, Lloyd Clay Adams, was the light of her life, and each of them felt most blessed to have had so much time with one another. She will be greatly missed as she was a person of great presence.
A graveside service will be held for Ruth on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 11:00AM at White Plains Friends Meeting Church Cemetery with Pastor Charles Fishel officiating. The family will receive friends the night prior, Friday, June 14, 2024, from 5:00PM – 7:00PM at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
