Ruth Motsinger Kitchens

KITCHENS Ruth Motsinger Kitchens' lifeline of 91 years ended on October 18, 2012 when she died at Salemtowne Community. She was born September 22, 1921 in Wallburg, NC to Jacob Ezra Motsinger and Blanche Hall Motsinger. She graduated with a BA in Education from Meredith College in 1941, and formed a lifetime friendship with four classmates and their families. Ruth married James M. Kitchens on December 7, 1944. After a remarkable three-week honeymoon saga in NYC, her husband shipped overseas to France with the 3rd Army. Ruth returned to North Carolina where she worked as a tab-machine instructor at the Wilmington Ship Yard for the remainder of World War II. In the succeeding years, Jim's employment with Western Electric/Lucent resulted in 7 transfers and thirteen homes in four states. Ruth was a wonderful listener and in every community she made friends that remained friends for life. Ruth enjoyed knitting, cooking, collecting menus and making memorable desserts. She also enjoyed reading, bridge and playing gin with her husband. But nothing was as important to her as the love she showered on Jim, her children and her grandchildren. She adored being a Nana. Ruth was a member of the Junior League, the First Baptist Church on Fifth Street, the Enablers Sunday School Class and WMU and she was a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She is survived by her loving husband, James M. Kitchens; three children: Laura and Walter Elcock, Jim and Anne Kitchens and Lynn Kitchens; four grandchildren: Hilah Schutt, Catherine Schwartz, Walker Kitchens and Will Kitchens; and three great-grand children: Jasper, Elsa and Luke Schutt. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, November 3 at 3 p.m. in the SAAL Auditorium at Salemtowne Retirement Community. Salemtowne Pastor Linda Browne will preside. Interment will be held in the columbarium at the Forsyth Memorial Cemetery. The family is grateful to a host of friends including Dr. Toni Wymer, Leanne Moore, Lillian Stimpson, the Traemore Community and the Salemtowne Retirement Community for the professional, compassionate care provided over the years. Memorial gifts are welcomed for the Residential Financial Assistance Fund of Salemtowne at 1000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. Online condolences may be made at hayworth-miller.com.
