Mrs. Ruth Phelps Hartley, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, January 3, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 17, 1922 in Winston-Salem to the late Benjamin T. and Lois Timmons Phelps. Mrs. Hartley was a 1939 graduate of Griffith High School. She was employed for a number of years at Hanes Knitting Mill where she also played on their softball team, and later worked at Waughtown Baptist Church Child Care. She was a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed baking and time with her family. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald G. Hartley; five brothers; and three sisters. Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Harry D. Hartley; a son, Benjamin Hartley of Kernersville; a daughter-in-law, Lee Boatright Hartley of Kernersville; two granddaughters, Stacey Hartley Carlson and husband Jeff of Dublin, Ohio, and Lynn Hartley Nolen and husband Jeff of Kernersville; one sister, Bettie Swett of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 12:00 Noon Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
