Ruth Sims Carter, age 96, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully on March 11, 2023, at Trellis Supportive Care after a long and meaningful life. Born April 14, 1926, she was the daughter of Rev. Edward T. Sims and Sallie Hunter Sims. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick P. Carter, son Frederick Sims (Rick) Carter, and six siblings. She is survived by her daughter Carol Ruth Carter and Vickie Scruggs of Morganton, daughter-in-law Eugenia S. Carter, grandchildren Sarah Ann Carter Rider and Frederick Christopher (Chris) Carter, great grandsons Jerry and Bryson Rider, and several nieces, great nieces, and nephews. Ruth graduated from RJ Reynolds High School and attended Mars Hill College. She began working at RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. as a lab technician and spent most of her time in Winston-Salem. In 1962 she moved briefly to Santa Maria, CA, where she enjoyed the beauty of the west coast and travelled every weekend to various national parks and cities. Always on the go, Ruth enjoyed hiking and camping. She also loved spending time at Oak Island where the family owned a special beach cottage. A friend to everyone, Ruth would always listen patiently and help with any situation. Her mind was sharp until the end. Her knowledge and outlook on life was remarkable and resulted in many unforgettable memories to those who knew her. Ruth lived her life surrounded by the love of her family and friends, the kinship of animals, and the beauty of plants and nature. A family memorial will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Trellis of Winston Salem. Mrs. Carter and her daughter would like to extend their deepest gratitude to her caregivers and neighbors, who cared for her compassionately during her time of need.
