Mrs. Ruth Jarvis Brewer of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Ruth was born in Winston-Salem on August 20, 1914. She was the youngest of five children. She was preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Lewis K. Brewer. They had a wonderful time together for 49 years and shared many memories including traveling, swimming and diving. Anyone who met Ruth remembered her. Her spirit, her sense of humor, her gift of putting you at ease was noted by all. Nurses, doctors, caregivers, and her many friends never forgot this special person who entered their lives. She was a den mother, Sunday School teacher, circle member and a devoted mother. Her one goal was to be the best mother possible and have educated children. She achieved both goals. Ruth had friends of all ages, backgrounds and geographical locations. People were touched by her presence and her spirit of compassion, wisdom and humor. She had a talent for great conversations wrapped in a smile, a special twinkle in her eye and love of life. She loved to travel and visited many places taking her entire family, children and grandchildren, with her. These trips are some of the family's fondest memories. She loved bingo and never missed an opportunity to play. Everyone who met Ruth was touched in some way by her spirit, her strength, and most of all her faith. She was a member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church and worshiped there faithfully as long as she was able. Her beloved children are Bunny Jennings (Harry) of Eden, NC, Kay Johnson Ware (Bill) of Bermuda Run, NC, Sandra R. Cummings of North Myrtle Beach, SC, and L. Kenneth Brewer (Kimeran) of Douglasville, GA; her much loved grandchildren are Zann Jennings (Noelle) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Matthew Jennings (Jill) of Burlington, KY, Phillip W. Johnson III of Kernersville, NC, Kendra Sanderson (Brent) of Alpharetta, GA, and Kenneth G. Brewer (Shannon) of Greeneville, TN; her great grandchildren are Zachary, Delaney, and Jacob Jennings, Phillip and Brewer Johnson, Brody and Laney Sanderson, Sydney, Kyndall, and Ellah Brewer, and Luke Jennings; nieces and nephew, Charlie Martin Jr. (Marty), Barbara Ann Vernon, Idalia Canter (Tom), and especially Noel Harris whom she loved as a daughter. A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Fries Memorial Moravian Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.
