Mr. Russell Clarence Vass, 89, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010 at Village Care of King. He was born in Carroll County, VA on August 28, 1920 to the late Joseph Roosevelt Vass and Ocra McGrady Vass. Mr. Vass graduated Hillsville High School in 1939. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall and was awarded a lifetime membership in the International Bluegrass Museum in Owensboro, KY. Mr. Vass retired from Pilot Freight Inc. in 1979 as a truck driver. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lorene Martin Vass of the home, two daughters, Veda Vass Mabe and husband Bobby of Winston-Salem and Dawn Vass Cooke and husband Kent of King, two grandchildren, Benjamin Gray Mabe and wife Debbie and Scarlett Nester Parrish, two great-grandchildren, Brittany Rose Mabe and Patrick Neill Mabe and three sisters, Mozelle Montgomery, Sybil Montgomery and Icie Tolbert and husband Hobart. Funeral services for Mr. Vass will be conducted 6:30 Monday evening, June 7, 2010 at Freedom Baptist Church in Rural Hall with Rev. John T. Byerly and Rev. Jon White officiating. The family will receive friends directly following the service at the church. Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 8, 2010 in Gladesboro Lutheran Church Cemetery in Gladesboro, VA. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of Russell Vass to Village Care of King, 440 Ingram Rd., King, NC 27021. The family would like to thank all of Mr. Vass's caregivers at Village Care for the love and care shown to Russell in his time of need.
