On Wednesday May 25th, Russ went home to be with his heavenly Father. Russ had been in declining health from complications following a stroke on January 30th. He is now breathing without a struggle as he walks in the presence of his God. Born in Raeford N.C. March 13th 1948. Russ was the son of Richard Franklin and Virginia Lewis Taylor. He was a graduate of UNC Pembroke and the Winston-Salem Police Academy. He retired at age 52, post a 30 year career in the Winston Salem Police Department. He had a diverse career in law enforcement and worked in training and development and instilled his work ethic in many of his colleagues and ""trainees"" such as Tim Taylor and Mike Allen who remained like family to him. In his retirement he enjoyed having more time with Karen, the love of his life and their family. One of his favorite past-times was fishing and he won many trophies and awards in tournaments . He and Karen also enjoyed motorcycle riding with the "" Bad Apples"" and Russ kept his Harley Davidson in pristine condition. In recent years Russ had become an avid photographer and loved being behind the camera for family events and celebrations. He captured many wonderful memories that will live on in honor of him. His most recent accomplishment was becoming ""Russ!"" to his ""GRAND"" son Paxton . He loved Paxton with all of his heart. Russ leaves to honor his memory and his life, his beloved Karen and her children Justin (Jessica) and Preston Ward and his precious ""Grandson"" Paxton. His cousin/brother Gary ( Sally ) Taylor and childhood friend Johnny ( Barbara) Young. Multiple fishing buddies one of whom was his best friend, Jimmy Allred. His surviving Aunts and Uncles are: Everett (Sarah) Taylor, Elmer(Peggy) Taylor, Lillian Thames, Norma (Carl) Dooley , many cousins and a multitude of friends. His parents by choice Andrew and Virginia Yates . His extended family Mitchell (Trish) Yates, Allen ( Sharon ) Yates, Angie Alexander and Becky (Frank ) Miller and numerous nieces and nephews that are part of that extended family. Russ loved fishing and would be honored if memorials be directed to ""Catch A Dream"" foundation Catchadream.org or Outdoors Without Limits in his memory. Russ touched the lives of so many and truly became a ""fisher of men"". He taught the art of fishing and celebrating the catch .His life will be honored at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, May 31st @ Hayworth Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. Visitation will follow immediately after the service at the home of Karen Young. A special mention of thanks and gratitude to all the WSPD and the ladies behind the blue line, care providers, all the friends and family who mourn with us , but also rejoice that Russ is ""enjoying"" no more pain and suffering.
