Kernersville - Rufus Sidney Vanhoy, 80, died Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Magnolia Creek Assisted Living. Rufus was born April 25, 1936 in Forsyth County to John Gideon Vanhoy, Sr. and Dora Lee Sapp Vanhoy. He was a longtime member of Kerwin Baptist Church and at one time served as a deacon. Rufus attended Kernersville High School, and was employed by the Winston-Salem Journal for 25 years. He also drove a school bus for many years. Rufus loved to farm and garden. He was a good neighbor and was well-loved in the community - always willing to lend a hand and give good advice.
In addition to his parents, Rufus was preceded in death by his son, Rufus Sidney Vanhoy, Jr.; one sister, Thelma Brown Wells; three brothers, John G. Vanhoy, II; Raymond Payne and Eugene Payne.
Surviving are his daughter, Patricia Diane Vanhoy; a son, Mitchell Aaron Vanhoy; one granddaughter, Rachael Stoddart (Matthew); two sisters, Ann Vanhoy Yountz (Jerry) and Kay Payne Adams (Bill); two brothers, Vance Vanhoy and Kenneth Vanhoy (Helen); and numerous nephews and nieces.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel with Pastor Daniel Hawtree and Pastor Emeritus, Dr. Joe Myers officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service.
