Ruby Mae Leonard Shields

Mrs. Ruby Mae Leonard Shields age 91 of Kernersville passed away Tuesday February 21, 2012 after a long illness. She was born February 19, 1921 in Forsyth County to Adam Lindsay and Dula Ethel Green Leonard and lived in the Union Cross community of Forsyth County .Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers Gilmer, Arnold, Bernie, Ivory, Earlie, Richard, and Ray Leonard, sisters, Cora Yokley, Gertrude Reid, Orpha Pope, Mabel Watkins, Annie Bodenheimer, Naomi Cecil and an unnamed infant sister. Mrs. Shields was the last surviving of 14 children. Mrs. Shields was a member of Union Cross Moravian Church where she was an active member of the Women's Fellowship and attended Circle meetings. She also assisted in preparing and serving meals for the bereaved in the church and the community. Surviving are her husband Wyatte Shields, a son Donald Shields and wife Barbara of Kernersville, one granddaughter Donna Elizabeth Hardy and husband Leslie A. Hardy, and nieces and nephews including Jack Leonard whom she considered a brother. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday February 24, 2012 at Union Cross Moravian Church with Rev. Don Griffin and Rev. Linda Browne Officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Thursday at Hayworth- Miller Kernersville Chapel. The Shields family wishes to thank each member of the dedicated staff at Salemtowne for their kindness and care for the past almost three years and especially for the exceptional compassion and care during the last few weeks.
