Ruby Elizabeth Sink Fishel passed away on November 23, 2010. She was born to Clyde Edward and Ethel may Conrad Sink on October 12, 1926. She was the second of 5 children, Clyde Edward, Jr., Esther Mae, Melba Rose, and Rex Albert. Ruby's parents, her siblings Clyde, Esther, and Rex, her son-in-law, Steve Atkins, and her beloved husband, Sanford Henry Fishel, Jr. ""S.H."" all preceded her in meeting their Savior. She met her sweetheart, S.H., before he deployed to serve in World War II. During the war, Ruby served her country making parachutes, and then later working for Western Union, transcribing telegrams. While working for Western Union, she often was the first to learn tragic news of friends and loved ones lost while serving in the war. Thankfully, her sweetheart came home to her when the war ended. They were married on June 13, 1945, surrounded by their families. They brought four children into this world, Judy Fishel Joyce (Robbie), Patricia Ellen Fishel Atkins (Steve), Sanford Henry Fishel, III (Debbie), and Angela Beth Fishel Honeycutt (Robbie), who all knew they were loved and cherished from their first moments. In her own words, Ruby wrote to her children, ""It hasn't always been perfect by any means since June 13, 1945, but we have trusted and tried. Always - regardless of all hardships, struggles, and trials, remember they can be overcome. With the Lord, nothing is insurmountable. Keep your eyes on the Lamb!"" 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren will miss their Granny greatly, but are all thankful for the impact she had on each of their lives. Ruby's life centered around her family and church. She had the gift of hospitality and loved to plan dinners and feed a crowd. Ruby was a lifelong member of Friedberg Moravian Church, where she served with the Ladies of Circle 3, and also helped orchestrate meals for families experiencing loss and difficult times. She served faithfully as a Diener for many years, and her smile carrying Lovefeast buns and serving coffee is a cherished memory. Ruby worked with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system in several schools, always developing close relationships with her students and faculty. One of her favorite endeavors was running a Christmas tree lot in Salisbury for her son's tree business. She and S.H. brought much Christmas spirit to the customers that soon became fast friends after retuning year after year to purchase their trees. Ruby loved to travel, and took several trips overseas soaking up every opportunity to learn about her own genealogy and the history of the Moravian Church. Even though she traveled to many different countries, Ruby's favorite vacation spot was White Lake, NC. Ruby and SH created a Haven for their family to visit and be together, and made it possible for the whole family to create treasured and life-long memories. Ruby's family will smile for many years to come as they think of the way that she could make even the most menial task seem like a genteel activity. She always had her lipstick on. She was smart and witty, and wanted the best for her children and grandchildren. Most importantly, she desired to pass on a legacy of faith in Jesus Christ. She passed on knowing that all of her children loved the Lord and we're working to pass on that love to their children. In a letter to her children she wrote, ""Sometimes the steps are steep and they have splinters and tacks in them, but keep on climbing, children. My soul hath grown deep like the River. Remember we shall always be together."" Her family will thankfully remember the wisdom, strength, and resilience that Ruby exemplified for them, and they look forward to a blessed reunion one day. The funeral will be conducted at 3pm, Saturday, November 27 at Friedberg Moravian Church with Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and Rev. James C. Newsome, Jr officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends at the church from 2-3 PM prior to the service. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
