Royden Raymond Combs, age 93, heard God’s call and went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 28, 2023. He is alive, well, and reunited with his parents, Otto Raymond and Carrie Iola McCraw Combs; siblings, Jessie Tilley, Ralph Combs, and Larry Combs; grandson, Eric Williams and daughter Erica; and many other family members and friends. He was born in Winston-Salem, NC, where he attended Mineral Springs School, obtained his GED, and completed a certificate program at Piedmont Bible College. His most cherished education was one-on-one with God, studying the Bible at the kitchen table for hours every evening, where he pondered deep questions that stumped the most experienced college professors and pastors. He worked at Hanes Hosiery (Sara Lee) with perfect attendance beginning at age 16 until he retired, was rehired, and eventually retired again. He served in the US Army (and the Reserves) where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church for over 56 years where he served as Deacon and Sunday school teacher of the Berean men’s class. His faith was genuine and he shared it with everyone around him. He loved discussing the Bible, singing in the car or around the house, spending time with family and friends, playing horseshoes, drinking coffee, and eating homegrown tomatoes, Peter Pan peanut butter, and BBQ (not necessarily together). He was skilled with his hands and could fix about anything on a car, lawnmower, or around the house. He was a smart, strong, loving, protective family man and leader. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Gracie Pegram Combs; daughters, Lisa Poole and husband Terry, Carrie Williams and husband Daniel; grandchildren, Kristin Pegram and husband Brian, Cary Poole and wife Jenny, Tabetha Bowman and husband Greg; great-grandchildren, Dakota, Boaz, and Shiloh Pegram, Abigail and Zachary Poole, Kiera, Braydon, and Kylie Williams; and many other dear family members. Our beloved Royden, Daddy, and Papaw, “We will see you soon!” His life celebration will be at Hayworth-Miller Chapel, Rural Hall, 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 3, 2023, with Rev. David Harman and Brother Joseph Brian Pegram officiating. Interment will follow the service at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1:00 PM.
