Ronald 'Ron' George Seeber

Surrounded by loved ones singing Amazing Grace, Ronald George Seeber made his way home on Friday, June 22nd , joining those who had gone before him, and for whom he faithfully prayed each night-his mom and dad, Earl and Marguerite Seeber, his brother James, dear friends Sister Patrice, John, and Maria, and many others. Ron was the kind of man that once you got on his prayer list, living or dead, you never got off! He was faithful to you on into eternity. Ron was born in Saratoga Springs, New York. The first in his family to go to college, he excelled in academics and earned a BA in English Literature from Hamilton College, and a law degree from Duke University. While at Duke, he fell in love with and married Sandy, his wife of 47 years. He also grew to love the warm climate and friendly people of the south, and decided to make his home in North Carolina. He had a very successful career, including 42 years of public service in the areas of city planning and municipal law. During the 37 years he served as City Attorney of Winston Salem, he was a powerful advocate for the city, and never lost a major lawsuit. He served as president of the North Carolina chapter of the American Planning Association; president of the North Carolina Municipal Attorney's Association; board member for the North Carolina League of Municipalities; and chair of the Planning and Zoning section of the International Municipal Lawyers Association. He also taught at Wake Forest Law School, and published an article in their Law Journal. Though he took great pride in his work, nothing gave him more joy that his music, his faith, and his family. He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, and played his guitar and led the singing at Sunday worship and other occasions there for over twenty years. He was also an officer and active member of the Secular Franciscan order. Since his retirement over four years ago, he read over 200 books, and delighted in having lively and spirited conversations on theological, historical, and political issues with anyone willing to engage him. Although he loved to travel, he relished cooking hearty and delicious meals at home for friends and family, and fishing, hunting, and taking nature walks at the cabin. But his ultimate treasure was his family, especially the ""grandbabies,"" as he perennially called them, no matter what age they happened to be! He did not live for himself alone, but gave his life for the good and wellbeing of others, and shared generously his gifts of courage, strength, laughter, integrity, and faithfulness with those he loved. Ron will be greatly missed by his family, including his wife Sandy; his children, Kurt Seeber and his wife Hope, Erika Ransom and her husband Britt, and Jonathan Seeber and his wife Rebecca; and his 10 grandchildren--Jacob, Benjamin, Maggie, Andrew, Tarah, Noah, Madelaine, Ellena, Jonathan Paul, and Josephine. Ron will also be missed by his two sisters from Glens Falls, New York, Patti Slavin and her husband Gene, and Jackie Howard and her husband David; by his niece Jamie Balog and her family; and by his sister-in-law Gayle McDonald, her children Cary, Sean, Brian, Kevin, and Shannon and their families.
