Roland ""Red"" Eugene Miller, 74, of Winston-Salem, NC, passed away Tuesday night at the KBR Hospice Home with his family by his side. He was born August 7, 1936 in Winston-Salem. He was the son of the late Robert Vestal Miller and Myrtle Ayers Miller. He was a graduate of Griffith High School where he was a standout football player. He was selected to the Fireman's Bowl, while receiving many accolades and awards for his athletic achievements. After high school in 1956, Red enlisted and proudly served in the United States Marine Corp. He completed basic training at Paris Island, SC and then was transferred to Camp Pendleton, CA. After completion of his training he was assigned to duty in Hawaii. After receiving his honorable discharge he met and married Gayle Harper of Lexington, NC on September 5, 1959. They enjoyed many years of traveling together to exotic destinations and took several cruises with family and friends. His favorite vacations were spent annually with many members of his family at Myrtle Beach. He was most fond and passionate about watching his grandson play sports over the years and never missed a single game. Red retired from Stroh's Brewery with 30 years of service, and prior to that he was employed by R.J.Reynolds. An avid fisherman , Red enjoyed fishing with family along the outer banks of North Carolina on their boats, ""Sweet Caroline"" and ""Sea Bunch"". He participated in many King Mackeral tournaments throughout years. He was a member of Union Ridge United Methodist Church at 3620 Old Lexington Rd., Winston-Salem, NC. Red was preceded in death by his mother and father, sisters, Amelia Miller Smith of Winston-Salem, Clara Miller Moser of Lewisville and one brother, Robert ""RV"" Miller of Winston-Salem. Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Gayle Harper Miller and was the proud father of one son, Barry Dean Miller of Davidson County and one daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Phillip Pedro of Davidson County. He was the loving grandfather to Carl Wayne Boardwine also of Davidson County. Also surviving are sisters, Irene Martin of Winston-Salem, Linda Miller Ketner of Hubert, NC, Donna Miller Phillips of Clemmons and Candy Miller Newsom of Winston-Salem. He was also an uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 15, 2011 at Union Ridge United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Elrod officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
