Roger Allen Pike

Mr. Roger Allen Pike, 64, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Roger was born Dec. 12, 1946, in Plainfield, NJ, to the late Arthur Clark and Elizabeth Haynes Pike of Cranford, NJ. Roger was richly blessed with family and friends who cared for him deeply. He was a loving husband, dad, brother, granddad, and friend. He was preceded in death by his beloved nephew, Rev. Brian Allen Hamrick, whom God called home a year ago. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Ruth Morgan Pike. Survivors include his wife of 41 years (Dec. 28, 1968), Sandra Mozelle Martin; son Merritt Allen Pike (Serena Adkins) and granddaughter Sofia, of Winston-Salem; daughter Emily Elizabeth Pike (Jon Williams) of Greenville, NC; sister Nancy Pike Heinzel (Steve) of Springfield, IL; brother Bob Pike (Pegi) of Asheville; and twin sister Janet Pike Hamrick (Wayne) of Powhatan, VA. Among those who will cherish the memories of his love for them, his corny jokes, and his fluorescent green hat are his many nieces and nephews: Randy Heinzel (Alison, son Alex) of Wynnewood, PA; Dave Heinzel (Courtney, children Ethan and Mia Coco) of Springfield, IL; Sally Heinzel (Andrew Hughes) of Towanda, IL; Matt Pike (Sarah) of Charlotte; Sarah Pike Alexander (Jason, son Sam) of Charlotte; Mark Hamrick (Ali, son Wyatt) of Richmond, VA; and Rev. Brian Hamrick's wife Katherine (sons Nathan and Luke) of Lynn Haven, FL. Roger is also survived by Sandra's brother Cabell Martin (Terry), of New Kent, VA; their children Jim Martin (Lori), Jim's daughter Emma; Mike Martin (Kellie) all of Richmond, VA; and Michelle Martin McIntosh (Greg) of Seminole, FL. Roger graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1964 and St. Andrews Presbyterian College in 1968. He taught elementary and middle school in a two-room schoolhouse for seven years in Morgan, VT. After returning to Winston-Salem, Roger pursued a career in graphic arts and was influenced by the work of his grandfather, Merritt W. Haynes, who wrote and taught with American Type Founders. Transformation was an important theme in Roger's life. In his professional life he was proud to have facilitated the transformation of printing technology from lead type and zinc plates to the digital era in a career that included Winston Printing, Superior Typesetters, and Sara Lee Graphics. Roger enjoyed a strong friendship with Mr. Damian Birkel (Donna) of Winston-Salem. They served together with Professionals In Transition (PIT) to support unemployed and underemployed persons. Roger was a lifelong learner with a keen curiosity about the natural world, and he participated in Great Books for many years. He also enjoyed home improvement projects, growing food and gardening flowers with his wife Sandy. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Pkwy on Wed. Dec. 22 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller following the service.
