Roger G. Koeval, 73, of Advance, NC, passed away Feb 5, 2010. Roger fought a valiant battle against heart and lung disease for 10 years, inspiring many with his positive outlook, determination, and acceptance of God's sovereignty in all things. Roger's memory will be cherished by his survivors, Diane, his devoted wife of 48 years, daughter Carolyn Thurmond (Joe), son, Karl (Meredith), and five grandchildren, Joey, Rebecca, Callie, Holly, and Sarah. Preceded in death by his brother Don, survived by Don's wife Pat, brother Joseph (Sandy), sister Laurel Bird (Ronnie), and several nieces and nephews. Roger was a teacher and assistant principal for over 34 years, a Sunday School teacher, and church deacon, but his greatest success on earth was his role as husband, father, grandpa, uncle, brother, and friend. He was an active member and deacon at Twin City Baptist Church. He enjoyed the simple things: his garden and mango grove, camping, tinkering in the garage, reading/studying God's Word, and writing letters. He was known as ""a man of letters"", trying to single-handedly revive the lost art of letter writing. He began counting his correspondence in 1997, the last letter he sent being numbered 3140. He spent his entire adult life preparing to meet his Savior, and this was the most important thing to him. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 at Parklawn Memorial Park by Pastor Carey Hardy followed by a celebration of Roger's life at 1:00 PM at Twin City Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Wednesday Feb. 10 from 6-8 PM at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Roger's name to Twin City Baptist Church Children/Youth Ministries, 1337 Ebert St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Breathing Plus Pulmonary Rehab Program at WFUBMC (Attn Connie Paladenech), Medical Center Blvd, Winston-Salem, NC 27157.
